Hi there,

Due to our enormous efforts on the first two days of our  internship we had today free!! (This was an extreme relief as we had been working quite hard the past two days and were quite fat up with all the painting) Pam had offered to show us around the area which was obviously and opportunity we grabbed with great enthusiasm. Until now we have only been able to enjoy the area from above (the view from on top of the hill) so it was great to be able to see it from off the ground. As Pam had to do some wedding arrangements in the morning we were able to sleep in and we left the camping around 11.

New AbbyFirst up in our tour was Sweetheart Abbey in New Abby. New Abby was an beautiful village with some extremely cute cottages. Left from the Abbey was only a ruin which did not do off to the impressiveness of the place. The Abbey was unfortunately only accessible with payment so we decided to just walk around it and then continue journey. Next up was Drunburn a viewpoint over the Irish sea. The view was incredible and quite disturbing as we were looking at an empty sea arm (low-tide) and far behind that we could see some mountains (the high lands!!). We continued towards a little museum in honor of the “famous” John Paul Jones. Jones was the founder of the American Navy but was born in a little cottage at the south-west coast of Scotland. This cottage is the place around which they build the museum. (Fun fact: apparently there is a song in Dutch about this guys that is still sung by schoolchildren???)

View from the lighthouseNext up was exploring the rocky coast of Powill mount were Pam almost lost her phone and Marjolein and Amber spotted a huge jelly fish. Pam took us to Southerness lighthouse next. Southerness lighthouse was extremely nice as we, unexpectedly, were able to climb it! The stairs were a bit weak but we survived the journey to the top and were rewarded with a beautiful view at the top. (we felt a bit sorry for the guy at the top as we didn’t have any loose pounds to donate to the lighthouse) At Sandy Hills bay, which was our next stop, Pam treated us to an ice cream. The Ice cream was from a local brand called cream o’ Galloway. We started to get a bit tired but all the dogs at Rockcliff helped us wake up. (the dogs were extremely happy) We finished the tour at Kippfort which was a haven for cute boats and had some beautiful tree filled hills on the background.

Nachooo's (sharing platter)I know that I promised all of you some extremely interesting and difficult meals today (our road to Top Chef remember?) but I’ll have to disappoint you. It is not getting better than some basic nacho plate. Pam took us to dinner at “the steamboat inn” in Carseton. It was delicious and our view was, like all of our road trip, again the sea arm of the Irish sea. (Important note: I did not realize this was still the same water as it was high tide by now…)

This day was great as it allowed us to learn a bit more about the surrounding landscape and also about the Scottish culture. (Pam has been an amazing guide) So I guess I can check off at least one of my goals already!

See you tomorrow! ( or in 10 minutes as there is the possibility that I’ll only be able to post these blogs when I get home…)

Elise
